Advocate for a community! Pick a card and put yourself in the shoes of a local representative.

Description

Activity

This deck of cards can be used for multiple activities to teach the concept of elected representatives to students.

Example activities with students:

  • Draw a card from the deck and look at the electoral district profile. Complete one or all of the activities on the back of the card.
    • Come up with a name for the electorate.
    • Brainstorm the big issues for the electorate. What are the people worried about? What do they need?
    • Write 3-4 questions to ask the people in the electorate to help understand their needs better.
    • Make a list of the 5-10 things to do to get involved in the described community.
    • Draft a first speech to Parliament about the electorate.
  • Provide a card to a student as an example, and get them to invent their own electoral district.

Various – dependent on the activities you complete with the deck.

Preparation Required

  1. Print the instruction page (or refer to it online) for background about the resource and instructions.
  2. To create a deck of cards, print the remaining sheets A4 portrait and slice in half. Fold each cut A5 segment into half to create a front and back of a card.
