Taking Parliament to the Far North

Students holding up posters in their school gym.

This month, the Community Education Office visited the far north of South Australia to teach about Parliament and Civics to students in Leigh Creek, Roxby Downs, and Woomera. These students conducted a mock election, donned ceremonial attire, and debated in both the House of Assembly and Legislative Council to pass a bill through our state Parliament. The students from Marree Aboriginal School and Woomera Area School had the chance to be the first students to explore the Parliament in virtual reality with our kit of VR headsets.  Check out the Parliament in VR.

Students also had the opportunity to have their say – with most raising the need for a new pool in Leigh Creek, and an improved water slide in Roxby Downs.  Students in Woomera wanted more equipment in their playground.

The Community Education Office reached about 250 remote students on this trip. We look forward to our next regional programs in the APY Lands and far west of SA in the coming months!
