DESCRIPTION:The International Day of Parliamentarism is celebrated every year on 30 June\, the date in 1889 on which the IPU was founded. The Day was established in 2018 through a United Nations General Assembly Resolution. \nInstituting an international day for parliaments is particularly important at this critical time for parliamentary democracy\, when people are losing trust in political institutions and democracy itself is facing challenges from populist and nationalist movements. DESCRIPTION:The SA Schools Constitutional Convention has been running since 1995. It is an initiative between the Department for Education and the Parliament of SA. It is supported by the Australian Government. \nStudents have the opportunity to: \n\nlearn and share their views about Australia and its Constitution;\nfind out how the Constitution shapes our democracy; and\nlearn how the Constitution promotes understanding of our democratic heritage and traditions.\n\n2025 Event Details\nTheme: Should the Australian Constitution be easier to change? \nFriday 19 September 2025\n8.30am to 3.30pm\nParliament House\nNorth Terrace\, Adelaide. \nIn 2025 the program includes: \n\nPresentations by expert speakers\nA Q&A panel with Members of Parliament\nGroup workshops\nA debate and mock referendum in the House of Assembly Chamber.\n\nParliament House provides a unique venue for this learning experience with an optional tour on offer for students. Morning tea and lunch will be provided. \nHow to Nominate\nUp to 2 students from metropolitan schools and up to 4 students from regional schools can be nominated. To nominate students\, teachers should complete the nomination form by 5pm Friday 8 August 2025. \nIndividual schools are responsible for seeking parent/caregiver consent and transport arrangements. Registered teachers and staff from the Department for Education will be present\, however schools are encouraged to provide supervision on the day. \nFinancial support is available for students in regional and remote locations. DESCRIPTION:At 11 am on 11 November 1918 the guns on the Western Front fell silent after more than four years of continuous warfare. The allied armies had driven the German invaders back\, having inflicted heavy defeats upon them over the preceding four months. In November the Germans called for an armistice (suspension of fighting) in order to secure a peace settlement. They accepted allied terms that amounted to unconditional surrender. \nThe 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month attained a special significance in the post-war years. The moment when hostilities ceased on the Western Front became universally associated with the remembrance of those who had died in the war.  \nLearn More \n
