SUMMARY:SA Schools Constitutional Convention
DESCRIPTION:The SA Schools Constitutional Convention has been running since 1995. It is an initiative between the Department for Education and the Parliament of SA. It is supported by the Australian Government. \nStudents have the opportunity to: \n\nlearn and share their views about Australia and its Constitution;\nfind out how the Constitution shapes our democracy; and\nlearn how the Constitution promotes understanding of our democratic heritage and traditions.\n\n2025 Event Details\nTheme: Should the Australian Constitution be easier to change? \nFriday 19 September 2025\n8.30am to 3.30pm\nParliament House\nNorth Terrace\, Adelaide. \nIn 2025 the program includes: \n\nPresentations by expert speakers\nA Q&A panel with Members of Parliament\nGroup workshops\nA debate and mock referendum in the House of Assembly Chamber.\n\nParliament House provides a unique venue for this learning experience with an optional tour on offer for students. Morning tea and lunch will be provided. \nHow to Nominate\nUp to 2 students from metropolitan schools and up to 4 students from regional schools can be nominated. To nominate students\, teachers should complete the nomination form by 5pm Friday 8 August 2025. \nIndividual schools are responsible for seeking parent/caregiver consent and transport arrangements. Registered teachers and staff from the Department for Education will be present\, however schools are encouraged to provide supervision on the day. \nFinancial support is available for students in regional and remote locations. DESCRIPTION:30 students | Years 6-10 | Part 1: 90 minutes\, Part 2: 75 minutes | Free \nPart 1 available at Parliament House in term 2 2025 | Part 2 available at the Australian Space Discovery Centre in term 2 2025 | Special back-to-back sessions available \nThe Mission Control Workshop combines Civics and STEM skills in a two-part workshop. \nSouth Australia is going to attempt to terraform Mars. A Parliamentary Committee completed an inquiry into what industries would need to be taken to Mars for this project\, and the report identified 12 industries.  The problem?  The budget will only cover 10 out of 12 industries. \nPart 1: From Parliament to Mars (90 mins)\nThe Mars Space Mission Bill 2024 needs to pass both Houses of Parliament to determine which 10 industries will be going.  The Government\, Opposition\, Minor Parties and specific electorates/Members all have different industry priorities.  Students complete a role play passage of a bill to decide the 10 industries. \nStudents will think critically about the skills and knowledge needed for a successful mission to Mars. They will debate and vote on industries to send on the mission in a way that mirrors South Australia’ parliamentary process.  \nPart 1 is available at the Parliament of South Australia. For Part 1 bookings please submit a request form.  \nPart 2: Life on Mars (75 mins)\nStudents will work collaboratively to complete a hands-on design challenge based on industries that can be taken to Mars. DESCRIPTION:A Select Committee of the Legislative Council has been established to inquire into and report on the Children and Young People (Safety and Support) Bill 2024. \nThe purpose of the Bill is to protect children and young people and keep them safe from harm and preferably with their families\, to support and strengthen families and communities to improve outcomes for children and young people\, to support children and young people who are in care\, to promote working in partnership with families and carers\, to support children and young people leaving care\, to make related amendments to other Acts and to repeal the Children and Young People (Safety) Act 2017. \nThe inquiry is limited to the content of the Bill. DESCRIPTION:Learn about the new civics x science student program offered by the Parliament of SA and the Australian Space Agency: Mission Control.  Free professional learning sessions are available in both online or face to face formats. \n27 June 2024 – 4-5.30pm – Online option via MS Teams \n\nLearn about the Mission Control workshop\nTrial a portion of module 1\nLearn about the programs on offer from the Parliament and the Australian Space Discovery Centre\n\n17 July 2024 – 3.30pm-6.00pm – Face-to-face option – Starting at the Parliament of South Australia then moving to the Australian Space Discovery Centre at Lot 14 \n\nAfternoon tea provided\nLearn about the Mission Control workshop\nExperience module 1 at Parliament House\nVisit and explore the Australian Space Discovery Centre\nExperience module 2 at ASDC\nLearn about the programs on offer from the Parliament and the Australian Space Discovery Centre\n\nRegister Now \nAbout the Mission Control student program: \nSouth Australia is going to attempt to terraform Mars. A Parliamentary Committee completed an inquiry into what industries would need to be taken to Mars for this project\, and the report identified 12 industries.  The problem?  The budget will only cover 10 out of 12 industries. \nPart 1 – Parliament/Civics & Citizenship component: The Mars Space Mission Bill 2024 needs to pass both Houses of Parliament to determine which 10 industries will be going.  The Government\, Opposition\, Minor Parties and specific electorates/Members all have different industry priorities.  Students complete a role play passage of a bill to decide the 10 industries. \nPart 2 – Space Agency/STEM component: Students complete a design challenge for the different industries going to Mars – what will the public transport system look like?
