DESCRIPTION:30 students | Years 6-10 | Part 1: 90 minutes\, Part 2: 75 minutes | Free \nPart 1 available at Parliament House in term 1 2025 | Part 2 available at the Australian Space Discovery Centre in term 1 2025 | Special back-to-back sessions available \nThe Mission Control Workshop combines Civics and STEM skills in a two-part workshop. \nSouth Australia is going to attempt to terraform Mars. A Parliamentary Committee completed an inquiry into what industries would need to be taken to Mars for this project\, and the report identified 12 industries.  The problem?  The budget will only cover 10 out of 12 industries. \nPart 1: From Parliament to Mars (90 mins)\nThe Mars Space Mission Bill 2024 needs to pass both Houses of Parliament to determine which 10 industries will be going.  The Government\, Opposition\, Minor Parties and specific electorates/Members all have different industry priorities.  Students complete a role play passage of a bill to decide the 10 industries. \nStudents will think critically about the skills and knowledge needed for a successful mission to Mars. They will debate and vote on industries to send on the mission in a way that mirrors South Australia’ parliamentary process.  \nPart 1 is available at the Parliament of South Australia. For Part 1 bookings please submit a request form.  \nPart 2: Life on Mars (75 mins)\nStudents will work collaboratively to complete a hands-on design challenge based on industries that can be taken to Mars. DESCRIPTION:At 11 am on 11 November 1918 the guns on the Western Front fell silent after more than four years of continuous warfare. The allied armies had driven the German invaders back\, having inflicted heavy defeats upon them over the preceding four months. In November the Germans called for an armistice (suspension of fighting) in order to secure a peace settlement. They accepted allied terms that amounted to unconditional surrender. \nThe 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month attained a special significance in the post-war years. DESCRIPTION:National NAIDOC Week celebrations are held across Australia in the first week of July each year (Sunday to Sunday)\, to celebrate and recognise the history\, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. DESCRIPTION:The International Day of Parliamentarism is celebrated every year on 30 June\, the date in 1889 on which the IPU was founded. The Day was established in 2018 through a United Nations General Assembly Resolution. \nInstituting an international day for parliaments is particularly important at this critical time for parliamentary democracy\, when people are losing trust in political institutions and democracy itself is facing challenges from populist and nationalist movements. If democracy is to thrive\, then parliaments\, as the cornerstone of functioning democracies\, need to be strong\, transparent\, accountable and representative. \nThe International Day of Parliamentarism is a time to review the progress that parliaments have made in achieving some key goals to be more representative and move with the times\, including carrying out self-assessments\, working to include more women and young MPs\, and adapting to new technologies. \nLearn about contributing to our Parliament \nLearn about the International Day \n
